SUMMARY OF DUE DATES FOR ASSIGNMENTS

Abstract for final assignment October 3

First written assignment October 17

Final paper December 6

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

You are urged to discuss and debate all of the assigned readings. Written assignments are to be prepared and presented individually unless an agreement to engage in a group project is made with me in advance. Grades will be based on three components:

· Active class participation based on regular preparation of assigned class materials.

· A substantive research project, due Friday, December 6 (Abstract due October 3). Ideally this will constitute the preparatory work for your thesis and could become the first chapter. Please note that the deadline for the final project will not be extended except in cases of illness or other serious emergency. Late assignments will be penalized one letter grade.

· A smaller written assignment, due Thursday, October 17. Ideally this work will be a base for the final assignment.

The research paper should be a literature review in a specific subject area of your choice. This assignment must be typed or computer-generated text in 14 point font, double-spaced, and should not exceed twenty pages. You are expected to meet with me at least once after the abstract is presented to discuss your project. No written comments will be given on your abstract. It is just a starting point for our conversation. Your topic may be changed after October 3 if necessary.

For the written assignment due October 17, you should review and critique the ideas and concepts presented in a book. This assignment must be typed or computer-generated text in 14 point font, and should not exceed ten double-spaced pages. Concise, effectively presented arguments are encouraged. It will be helpful to you if you choose a book related to a prospective project topic. Please ask faculty for help in selecting books to review.
